In 1944, Dina defies her parents and leaves the farm in Kansas to join the war effort. Determined to preserve the democracy she believes in, she ends up fighting prejudice and winning the chance to make a career as one of only a few female lawyers in San Francisco.
Michael, a returning soldier, has left much of his innocence behind, most of it the day he was present for the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. All he wanted was a quiet return to home and a simple life. But when he discovers a pilfering of funds intended for use in the rebuilding of Europe and gets advice from a lawyer who is the first woman who has made him feel alive again since leaving Germany, he and Dina are pulled into a national intrigue that takes them across the country and half the world and puts them at odds with powerful hidden agendas within their own government.
